
A Journey of Purpose and Practice
Kristen Schmidt, MD is a board certified addiction psychiatrist. She received her undergraduate degree in English at the University of California, Berkeley prior to graduating with a Master’s Degree in Humanities from the University of Chicago. Her family and personal history of addiction and recovery motivated her to enter medical school, where she graduated first in her class from the University of Illinois-College of Medicine. Kristen then went on to General Psychiatry residency at Mayo Clinic, where she received the Small Grant Award for her research on pregnancy hormones and ethanol drinking behaviors in the female rat. She then completed a research and clinical fellowship in Addiction Psychiatry at UCLA, where she received advanced training in substance use disorders.
Sharing Knowledge, Shaping the Field
Her expertise in the brain, female hormones and addictive behaviors is highlighted in a book entitled, The Assessment and Treatment of Addiction: Best Practices and New Frontiers. She has shared her insights on such venues as Good Morning America, The Current, Star Tribune Facebook, and Mayo Clinic’s Read. Talk. Grow. Dr. Schmidt has authored several publications related to addiction treatment and has contributed a chapter to the most recent edition of the American Psychiatric Association’s textbook for Substance Use Disorders Treatment. Her memberships include: the American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry, the American Psychiatric Association and Alpha Omega Alpha.
